Suskol House Mural
Suscol Intertribal Council mural project
Sponsored by BACC Bay Area Creative Changemakers
with funds for California Arts Council was completed on July 29th, 2024
This mural is dedicated to the survivors of the genocides of Napa Valley in the 1850s. Native American survivors running out of Napa Valley north into Lake County ran this route through what is now referred to as Chiles-Pope Valley Road. This is still a back road connection from Napa Valley to Lake Count around Mount St Helena into Middletown.
It is titled “We Are Still Here!” This design was a collaborative creation with the participation of local tribal artists/members.Charlie Toledo/Towa descendant, as the current executive director of Suscol Intertribal Council directed and formulated the ideas before construction of Suskol House. The huge street facing the wall with no windows was designed with this mural concept in mind. It was a great delight to pull a team of Native American artists together under the leadership and guidance of Paul Stone, enrolled member of Big Pine Paiute tribe/ Washoe. His wife Angie Stone/ Apache/Cherokee.
