Welcome to the Suscol Intertribal Council
Preseving Native American Culture
Suscol Intertribal Council is a community-based, 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1972 and reorganized in 1992, seeking to bring healing between the existing population and the people who historically inhabited Napa Valley and nearby counties.
Since 1992, Suscol Intertribal Council has developed local educational outreach programs for public schools (K-14), community clubs, and other organizations. The organization continues to provide county-wide classes and annual events meant to bring the community together. Most classes and many events are open to the public.
Suscol Intertribal Council has developed a mentorship program to help California Native people make connections with agencies, foundations, and corporations that might be helpful to them. Refering interested parties to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for further contact with the tribes is ongoing.
In 1998, Suscol Council purchased property in Pope Valley with the vision of creating a land base for Native Americans to preform ceremonies and gatherings to keep the Indigenous culture alive. Suscol Council has partnered with the Napa County Resource Conservation Distric to help preserve and enhance land stewardhsip.
Suscol Intertribal Council is located in the Napa Valley, believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in North America. There is, however, no longer a land-based tribe in this county due to historical mass relocation and detrimental exposure to diseases.

The origin of the Suskol name
Suscol is the name of a Patwin village site that was being desecrated in the early 1970's. During this time, the "Suscol Indian Council" formed to stop that desecration and was instrumental in starting what is now the Native American Heritage Commission in Sacramento. They developed state-wide protocols for handling Native American remains and archeological sites.
In the Patwin language, one of the tribes whose traditional territory makes up a part of the Napa Valley, the word Suscol means "wet and green," describing the marshy lands of the southern crossing freeway south of Napa city.
